The PDP-Laban is disappointed by Marcoleta’s withdrawal from the Senate election.

MANILA, Philippines — House Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta’s decision to withdraw from the May 9, 2022 senatorial elections disappointed the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP Laban).

PDP-Laban President and Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said Marcoleta’s departure is a “huge loss” not just to the party but also to individuals who recognize the House leader’s “passion for country and deep awareness of the rights of every Filipino,” according to a press statement released Thursday.

While the PDP-Laban regards Marcoleta as a “genuine asset” to the party’s Senate slate, Cusi stated the party respects his decision to withdraw from the race.

“We respect Congressman Marcoleta’s choice with deep sadness,” Cusi stated. “He is a true asset to the PDP Laban Senatorial ticket, as well as a significant loss to the incoming Senate since this man is truly deserving of a position in the Senate.” He has always worked tirelessly to defend the rights of the downtrodden and disadvantaged, which include the impoverished, the elderly, the youth, indigenous peoples, women, and children.”

Marcoleta, who was one of the PDP-“Lucky Laban’s 7” Senate picks, announced his withdrawal from the contest on Wednesday, citing his “low” pre-election poll ratings.

Cusi stated that the PDP-Laban would continue to support Marcoleta’s causes.

Senatorial candidates for the PDP-Laban, he said, would press for Marcoleta’s proposed salary raise and other legislative initiatives.

“We know that he will continue to serve the Filipino people in different roles,” he added, adding that the party will always be supportive of his future intentions.

Cusi also stated that the PDP-Laban is now “more determined and vigilant” in supporting the UniTeam duo of former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Davao City Mayor Sara “Inday” Duterte, as well as other election hopefuls who will continue President Rodrigo Duterte’s policies and programs in the next administration.

“To ensure the continuation of President Duterte’s programs, policies, and advocacies, PDP Laban is more committed and diligent in campaigning for the BBM-Sara Uniteam and all PDP Laban candidates countrywide.” “We must safeguard our country’s future,” he stated.

Marcoleta’s decision is respected by UniTeam.

Marcos Jr.’s campaign stated it respected Marcoleta’s choice to get out of the Senate race.

While it is regrettable that Marcoleta, a member of the UniTeam slate, withdrew from the senatorial campaign, Marcos’ spokesperson, Atty. Vic Rodriguez, said in a statement on Thursday that there must be a “greater cause” behind it.

“Despite his decision to withdraw, we accept his decision and convey our sincere thanks for his continued support for the BBM-Sara tandem and the UniTeam,” Rodriguez stated. “At this point, we bow to serendipity, knowing that everything happens for a reason, and that Representative Marcoleta may be serving a different, though higher role in the end.”

In a recent one-on-one interview with Marcoleta, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte disclosed that he was one of the persons who encouraged the congressman to run for senator.

On April 9, Duterte lauded Marcoleta as a “principled man, highly honest, and a [man] with integrity” at the President’s Chatroom, which aired on state-run PTV-4.

Marcoleta was also praised by Duterte for being the most outspoken legislator against local media giant ABS-CBN Corp’s franchise renewal application.

Marcoleta expressed gratitude to Duterte for his “positive and kind backing” of his senatorial campaign.

He also thanked the People’s Democratic Party-Laban, the People’s Reform Party, and the UniTeam for including him in their senatorial slates.

Despite his withdrawal, Marcoleta stated that he will continue to support Marcos Jr. and Davao City Mayor Sara “Inday” Duterte’s UniTeam.

“The BBM-Sara combination epitomizes the politics of unity and working together for the sake of the motherland, despite various political persuasions – an element that is noticeably absent in other teams,” Marcoleta remarked.
