Ex-UN chief Ban Ki-moon and President Obama want to see more cooperation in the fight against climate change.

MANILA, Philippines β€” Through Climate Change Commission Secretary Robert Borje and former United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, the Philippines and former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon is aiming for greater cooperation in efforts to push for “climate financing,” which is expected to support developing countries’ mitigation and adaptation actions to address climate change.

According to a news release from Malacanang on Thursday, Borje met with Ban in Seoul, Republic of Korea, as part of the former’s official visit to the country.

Ban is the President and Chair of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), a treaty-based international intergovernmental organization dedicated to supporting and promoting strong, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth in developing and emerging economies.

Borje stressed the importance of unlocking climate finance for developing nations to fund climate change action programs throughout the discussion.

He noted that developing countries like the Philippines have taken bold efforts to combat climate change and that wealthy countries should do the same, particularly in terms of climate finance commitments.

“The Philippines’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) have been increased to 75%. While much of it is conditional, the rallying cry has been climate justice: “We need to do more for the least responsible, the least resourced, the most exposed and vulnerable,” Borje was reported as saying.

He expressed President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s views on climate issues, emphasizing climate justice for vulnerable poor countries and the rich world’s responsibilities to help.

“We want to reaffirm, and we want to cooperate on climate financing so that we can use the few resources we have wisely so that we can pursue country development as well,” Borje said Ban.

In previous addresses, Duterte has advocated for wealthier countries to compensate developing countries for climate-related harms.

Ban, for one, praised the Philippines for its commitment to combating climate change in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement, as well as its strong stances on climate change adaptation and mitigation.

When compared to commitments made more than ten years ago, he raised concern about wealthy countries’ contributions to climate financing.

“I’m spending my time talking to world leaders and community leaders about increasing the level of ambition in the battle against climate change.” “Climate change has the potential to devastate everything, including our civilization and interpersonal relationships,” he stated.

Both leaders understood the significance of the Philippines-GGGI collaboration in terms of financing practical and pragmatic climate action projects and green development efforts in the Philippines.

The development of solar energy projects in so-called last-mile villages with the support of private investors and enterprises is one of the areas being studied.

In 2017, Duterte signed the Instrument of Accession to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, an agreement to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius.

According to a report issued in 2019 by the Institute for Economics and Peace, the Philippines is the country most vulnerable to climate disaster.
