The Commission on Elections suggests May 9 as a special non-working holiday.

MANILA, Philippines β€” The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has proposed to President Rodrigo Duterte that May 9 be declared a national non-working holiday.

The Comelec en banc stated in Comelec Resolution No. 10784 that establishing election day as a holiday will allow Filipinos, particularly voters, to participate in national and municipal elections.

“Now, therefore, the Commission on Elections, by virtue of the powers vested in it by the Constitution, the Omnibus Election Code, and other election laws, resolved, as it hereby resolves, to request His Excellency President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to declare May 9, 2022, as a special non-working holiday all throughout the country in connection with the national and local elections,” read the April 27 Resolution.

Comelec Chairman Saidamen Pangarungan, as well as Commissioners Socorro Inting, Marlon Casquejo, Aimee Ferolino, Rey Bulay, Aimee Torrefranca-Neri, and George Erwin Garcia, signed the resolution.

Meanwhile, Casquejo, the head of the Comelec’s Office for Abroad Voting (OFOV), claimed that over 175,000 overseas voters have voted.

As of April 28, 175,266 overseas voters had cast their ballots, according to him.

With 83,250 votes, the Middle East and African countries received the most votes, followed by Asia and the Pacific with 76,745.

In total, 13,462 people voted in European countries, while 1,809 people voted in American countries.

The Comelec is aiming for a voter turnout of 50%. A total of 1,697,215 electors have registered to vote from abroad.

According to Casquejo, voter turnout in 2016 was 32%, whereas it was only 12% in 2019.
