The DA and the NTF-WPS have established the first fuel store in Pag-asa Island.

MANILA, Philippines β€” On Pag-asa Island, the Department of Agriculture, the National Task Force on the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS), and other government agencies opened the first petroleum store on Wednesday.

Ching Natividad-Caballero, Agriculture Undersecretary for Fisheries and Agri Industrialization, said the depot intends to save fishermen from additional expenditures associated with returning to mainland Palawan.

“This means that our fisheries, our fishermen, and the fish in the Kalayaan island group and the West Philippine Sea may refill and travel to that fuel depot,” she explained.

Caballero stated that the government must continue to support local fishermen despite rising gasoline prices.

“This is one location where we should be very happy because we have vibrant communities on Pag-asa Island,” she continued.

Meanwhile, she stated that the pandemic and rising gasoline prices have not hampered the production of the country’s farmers and fishermen.

Despite the typhoon’s devastation, the country produced about 20 million tons of palay, nearly two million more than in 2019, adding to the country’s 92 percent rice self-sufficiency.

“It’s not an easy journey to make, but this is where the Department of Agriculture has contributed to this self-sufficiency through the RTL, RCEF, and integrated rice programs,” Caballero added.

“In comparison to February, fish unloading has increased to 37.69 percent, so meron na tayong (so we have) 59,988.98 metric tons in all regions,” she added.

This resulted in a dip in fish prices, including a drop in galunggong prices from about PHP300 to around PHP240, as well as tilapia and bangus prices.
