Duterte believes that candidates’ fates are determined by fate.
MANILA, Philippines — On Sunday night, President Rodrigo Duterte confessed that he is doubtful whether his son, Davao City (1st District) Rep. Paolo Duterte, will be re-elected to a third three-year term.
Maria Victoria Maglana, a peace and development advocate, businessman Jamal Ranon Kanan, and Jovanie Mantawel, the younger Duterte, will face off against three independent candidates.
“Iyong congressman ko na anak, si Paolo, ewan ko kung manalo ngayon depende sa…eh talaga akong naniniwala ako ng destiny (My congressman son, Paolo, I’m not sure if he’ll be reelected, it depends…eh talaga akong naniniwala ako ng fate)
In a speech at a campaign event in Taguig City, Duterte said, “I truly believe in destiny).”
Duterte reflected on how he did not expect to win the 2016 presidential elections.
“Hindi ko talaga alam noong nanalo ako bakit ako naging Presidente,” says the narrator. Ano talaga ‘yan, gulong ng palad… Hindi ko masyado… But, as I’ve said before, I have no idea why I became President. It’s fate’s wheel, but you know there’s a time for everything,” he continued.
He hopes that if his children, who are standing in this year’s elections, are elected, they will give a better life to Filipinos.
Sara Duterte, the mayor of Davao City, is running for vice president, while Sebastian Duterte wants to succeed his sister as president.
“I hope that my children, Inday (Sara), and itong isang congressman sana, kung hindi na ako makatulong sa inyo, kung medyo tatanda na talaga ako, I pray that ‘yung mga anak ko sila na lang ang makatulong sa inyo lalo na ‘yung mg
If I am no longer able to assist you if I am too old, I hope my children will be able to assist you, particularly you Taguig residents),” he remarked.
He talked about his time as a congressman, mayor for over two decades, and vice mayor, even succeeding his daughter as mayor.
“Minsan magsabi ka na pulitiko, pabalik-balik ka, pabalik-balik, kung magtrabaho lang talaga kagaya ko, pabalik-balik ka, pabalik-balik ka, pabalik-balik ka, pabalik-balik ka, pabalik-balik ka, I was the mayor of Davao for 23 years. (Sometimes you say politicians keep coming back to work just like me.) Naging congressman ako, nagging vice mayor ako kay Inday at lahat na. I was the mayor of Davao for 23 years. He said, “I became a legislator, vice mayor of Inday, I’ve done it all”)
Duterte compared his political career to the life cycle of a star, comparing it to a star that runs out of hydrogen and dies.
“Once upon a time, para akong bituin na talagang doon in Davao and around the country.” But alam ko na ‘yung bituin na ‘yan, bababa rin ako (I felt like a celebrity there). But I know I’ll descend like a star),” he explained.
He expressed gratitude to Taguig City, Taguig-Pateros (1st District) Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano, and his wife, Taguig (2nd District) Rep. Laarni, for their support in his 2016 presidential quest.
Cayetano wants to return to the Senate, while Lani wants to reclaim the mayorship she held from 2010 to 2019.
In 2016, Cayetano ran as the President’s running partner but lost to Vice President Leni Robredo.
“Magpasalamat ako sa inyo mga taga-Taguig at of course, si Laarni at si Alan Peter kasi kayo ang gumawa para maging presidente ako,” he remarked.
