MANILA, Philippines — Before being used by the public, the latest 4th generation Light Rail Transit Route 1 (LRT-1) trains will undertake dynamic test runs over the existing LRT-1 line to verify their “reliability and performance.”

Enrico Benipayo, chief operating officer of Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), the LRT-1’s operator and maintenance provider, said in a statement on Wednesday that these trains will be observed moving along the LRT-1 line beginning Wednesday night and during “off-peak hours and weekends.”

“They are still unable to ride these Gen-4 trains.” “These trial runs are being conducted to imitate regular commercial operations and to ensure that these trains are safe for passengers once they are put into commercial service soon,” Benipayo explained.

There are 30 4th generation trains on the LRT-1, each consisting of four light rail cars.

These new trains will undergo dynamic testing, with two to three train sets passing over the LRT-1 line each day.

Each train, which was built by Mitsubishi Corporation and Spain’s Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrorcarriles (CAF), would undergo 1,000 kilometers of dynamic testing before being handed over to LRMC for commercial operation.

“We want to reassure our passengers that this activity will not disrupt LRT-1’s routine operations.” “We are very delighted to share this great development, and the first Gen-4 train set is expected to be commercially available by the end of May 2022,” Benipayo added.

Each of these new trains has a seating capacity of 1,300 passengers and a top speed of 70 kilometers per hour.

It has destination signs that tell passengers whether the trains are going north or south, as well as a modern driver station and accessibility for people with disabilities.
