The army has sent ‘peacekeepers’ to the town of Lanao Sur ahead of Monday’s elections.

CAMP Maguindanao’s SIONGCO. The Army’s 6th Infantry Division (6ID) today said more than 100 soldiers had been deployed in the Lanao del Sur town of Malabang owing to fierce political conflicts.

Due to political conflicts among numerous candidates, Malabang, one of the six coastal towns in Lanao del Sur’s first district, was placed under Commission on Elections (Comelec) jurisdiction.

Maj. Gen. Juvymax Uy, the 6ID leader and concurrent head of Joint Task Force Central, said in a statement that the Army’s 62nd Reconnaissance Company (62RC), a quick deployment unit of the 6ID, was moved to Malabang Tuesday.

The 62RC will supplement the local police and the two Marine companies previously dispatched to the area by the First Marine Brigade, according to Uy.

Due to long-standing competition among local political factions, the town of Tubaran, likewise in Lanao del Sur, was also placed under the Comelec administration.

The Army’s 102nd Infantry Brigade of the 1st Infantry “Tabak” Division is in charge of the town.
