Comelec acknowledges the Cusi group as a legitimate PDP -Laban Party

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Friday that the group of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) president Alfonso Cusi has been recognized as official members of the political party.

The poll body’s Second Division acknowledged the Cusi wing’s victory over Koko Pimentel III’s side in an 11-page Resolution.

“Considering that the 31 May 2021 and 16 July 2021 National Council Meetings, and the 17 July 2021 National Assembly, and their predicate resolutions, as well as prior and subsequent activities have done pursuant thereto, are lawful,” the judgment stated.

One of the decisive considerations, according to the Comelec, was President Rodrigo Duterte’s indisputable and well-established role as the group’s chairwoman.

It stated that the party chair’s acts are lawful and effective, such as the assembly for the National Council Meeting on May 31, 2021.

“The fact that he presided over the election of new sets of party officers and committee chairpersons validates the entire process, establishing the above-mentioned officers as lawfully elected offices of the PDP-Laban,” the Resolution continued.

The Cusi group filed a case with the Comelec in September 2021, requesting that the poll commission declare Pimentel’s camp as illegitimate party representatives.

The case arose after both sides filed their Sworn Information Update Statements (SIUS) with the Comelec ahead of the May 2022 elections, as mandated by the poll body.

PDP-Laban was designated the Dominant Majority Party in the May 9 elections by the Comelec on May 5.

Before the Commission en banc, Pimentel’s camp has five days to file a Motion for Reconsideration.
