Marcos is prioritizing agriculture, according to the DA chief.
MANILA – Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary William Dar stated on Tuesday that the agricultural sector is likely to be one of the future administration’s main objectives.
Dar stated his hope in a virtual press conference as incomplete and unofficial results indicate presidential contender Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. won by a landslide.
“I believe that the next administration will have the political will and the ability to make agriculture a top priority or one of the top priorities and that the budget for agriculture would be double or triple the current budget of the Department of Agriculture,” he stated.
Despite the “brewing food catastrophe,” Dar asked the nation to support the president-elect in his efforts to maintain stability.
“We must unify and support Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr.’s presidency,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the secretary pointed out that one of Marcos’ slogans, the PHP20 pricing, is only applicable to palay.
“I believe the PHP20 per kilo is for palay, not rice,” Dar explained. “We already have a farmgate price of PHP19 for palay, so increasing that to PHP20 is extremely practical.”
Programs with banners
Dar noted that with 51 days till the Duterte administration expires, they will present their flagship programs to the new administration in order to secure food security in the country.
He brought up the National Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization and Industrialization Plan in particular (NAFMIP).
“It was there that we launched our 10-year strategic plan, which was built on a rock-solid foundation.” Ito ‘yung pinaka, isang (the most, one) big attachment sa transition. We’ll condense everything, but there will be a lot more on the agenda,” he remarked.
Dar believes this is critical given the anticipated global consequences of the ongoing Ukraine-Russia issue and the continued rise in petroleum prices.
“NAFMIP will be the anchor for any meaningful financial support; we need greater help this time around, para sa ganun, maitaas natin’yung level ng production natin sa bansa,” he remarked.
