Russia is accused by Germany of waging a “grain war.”

On Saturday, Germany accused Russia of waging a “grain war” that is jeopardizing global food security.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told a news conference at the end of the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in the Baltic resort town of Weissenhaus that Moscow was consciously attempting to expand the Ukraine war around the world, notably in Africa.

She accused Russia of attempting to impede grain exports by blocking Ukrainian ports, claiming that this was not part of the war’s collateral damage.

“We must not be naive,” the minister said, claiming that Russia is attempting to undermine international unity on purpose.

According to Baerbock, the Russian military has blocked Ukraine’s seaports, stranding millions of tons of grain.

She noted that the Group of Seven (G7) is looking into other ways to transfer grain from Ukraine to overcome the Russian blockade in the region.

Exports via the Baltic ports are being investigated after challenges with rail transport via Romania due to different track widths, she added, saying that prerequisites would first have to be clarified as to how the ports might be accessed.

According to the minister, 5-6 million tons of grain can be delivered from Ukraine by sea each month.

“You receive much less grain with a training delivery,” she explained.

However, according to Baerbock, every ton delivered can assist to alleviate the hunger issue.

So far, a small portion has been shipped via rail, primarily through Romania, she added, citing congestion caused by the fact that Ukraine and Romania have differing track lengths.

With 25 million tons of grain languishing in Ukrainian ports, Baerbock cautioned that there would be no acceptable answer as long as Russia bombed Ukraine.

“This is the grain that the world sorely requires,” she continued.

“Preventing famine in a few months isn’t the only goal. The blockade’s impacts are already being felt. Even without the war in Ukraine, providing food for everyone is a huge challenge, and people are already starving to death.

“That is why it is critical that we act in concert,” she stated.
