Finland is preparing to apply to NATO on May 18th, according to a top official.
On May 18, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto told the Aftonbladet newspaper that Finland may request to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
“This [application] will be made by our permanent representative to NATO in Brussels, possibly on Wednesday. If negotiations with NATO begin, they will be handled by a delegation led by the foreign and defense ministers “he stated.
Finland’s parliament will hold debates on the country’s NATO membership possibilities on May 16.
Finland should seek NATO membership as soon as feasible, according to a joint statement issued by President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin on May 12.
On Sunday, the formal ruling on the application is expected.
The debate over Finland’s future NATO membership heated up in early April, with the alliance’s major members backing the initiative.
In Finland, the majority of parliamentarians voted in favor of joining the bloc.
Moscow will have to take military-technical measures to counter threats to its national security, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
