PH and Australia’s relationship is elevated to a “strategic partnership.”

MANILA – According to Australian Ambassador Steven Robinson AO, the Philippines and Australia are planning to elevate their bilateral relations to strategic partnership “before the end of the year.”

According to the envoy, this came as a result of a number of conversations and high-level engagements between the two countries in recent years, including the August 2021 Philippine-Australia Ministerial Meeting.

“In August 2021, they established a fairly ambitious agenda that discussed the sectors of development that were engaged, such as peacebuilding, economic recovery, commerce, and security cooperation. As a result, by the end of this year, we’ll have elevated our bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership “He announced this at a reception held at his Makati City home on Tuesday night.

This, according to Robinson, reflects not only the two countries’ growing cooperation but also Australia’s view of the Philippines as a regional partner.

The bilateral relationship between Canberra and Manila is focused on development, education, people-to-people linkages, trade and investment, and defense.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of a law enforcement alliance aimed at combating child exploitation and terrorism.

In terms of education, Robinson stated that Australia will invest at least 90 million Australian dollars in the Bangsamoro region between 2017 and 2026 to help boost basic education.

“Peacebuilding is also vital to Australia, and what we do in the BARMM, in the south, is crucial. We’re a great backer of peace and development in Mindanao,” he stated.

“And that will be vital in the future, not only for the Philippines but for the entire region’s stability,” he continued.

It’s worth noting that Mindanao receives more than half of Australia’s yearly PHP3 billion aid program, which supports the peace process, normalization, education, and conflict resolution.

Robinson stated that Australia’s close relationship with the Philippines would remain under the new administration.

“I believe we will continue to focus on the Philippines in the same way we have in the past. Defense connections are extremely vital, as is development assistance, trade, and investment “he remarked.

According to Robinson, Manila has made “enough reforms” in recent years to entice Australian investors to come in.

“What I’m seeing is a lot of Australian companies wanting to come to the Philippines that haven’t been here before,” he added.

According to Christopher Lim, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner at the Australian Embassy in Manila, commercial connections between the two countries have prospered despite the pandemic.

For example, agri-food exports from Australia to the Philippines increased by 90% from 2020 to 1.5 billion Australian dollars. According to Lim, the embassy has received numerous requests from Australian businesses interested in partnering in the Philippines.

“The Australia-Philippines trade and investment relationship has reached new heights, and we look forward to working with the business community to scale even higher heights for our bilateral relationship to fulfill its full potential,” he added.
