MANILA – Malacanang hailed the 12 newly elected senators on Wednesday and expressed the desire of working closely with them.

“We congratulate the Republic’s 12 newly elected Senators.” In a press statement, acting presidential spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said, “Our people have elected old and new faces in the Senate, and there is a sense of hope and optimism with the new set of lawmakers.”

He urged the newly elected senators to work together to pass laws that will help the country’s economy recover.

“After a fractious election campaign, it is now time to move forward with the difficult task of accelerating our economy’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. Let us collaborate closely and pray for the success of our country,” he continued.

Robin Padilla, Loren Legarda, Raffy Tulfo, Sherwin Gatchalian, Francis Escudero, Mark Villar, Alan Peter Cayetano, Juan Miguel Zubiri, Joel Villanueva, Jospeh Victor “JV” Ejercito, Risa Hontiveros, and Jinggoy Estrada are the 12 senate candidates that won.

Hontiveros was the lone opposition candidate that won the elections on May 9. She was elected to the Senate for the second time.

The Senate contest attracted 63 contenders this year.

However, because Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta abandoned his senatorial run under the UniTeam coalition, a total of 64 names are on the ballot.

The Philippines’ Senate, or upper house of Congress, is made up of 24 senators.

According to the Department of Budget and Management, a senator earns PHP273,278 every month.
