Electric cooperative hopes to restore power in Southern Leyte by June.

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – The Southern Leyte Electric Cooperative (Soleco) hopes to restore power to the remaining 71 villages impacted hard by Typhoon Odette five months ago by the end of next month.

In a phone interview on Thursday, Soleco general manager Jonathan Empeno stated that a lack of manpower and materials had hampered efforts to restore power throughout the past five months of restoration activities.

After more than five months of power outages caused by “Odette,” only 432 out of 503 villages in Southern Leyte have had power restored.

Soleco claimed that out of the 105,787 affected electricity consumers, 90,527 homes and businesses have been powered as of March.

This indicates that the power outage is still affecting 15,260 homes.

“With some linemen from Eastern Visayas electric cooperatives who returned this week to reinforce the work of our linemen and contractors, we plan to fully restore electricity by June,” Empeno said in a phone interview.

The towns of Macrohon, Padre Burgos, Libagon, Pintuyan, San Juan, Anahawan, Hinundayan, Limasawa, and Silago have all had their power restored.

Maasin City, Tomas Oppus, Bontoc, Sogod, Liloan, San Ricardo, Saint Bernard, San Francisco, Hinunangan, and Malitbog are among the partially powered communities.

To restore power in Southern Leyte, electric cooperatives have already spent more than PHP300 million.

The sum includes a PHP100 million loan from the National Electrification Administration to Soleco, as well as a PHP39 million contingency fund for repair operations.

When Typhoon Odette hit areas of Visayas and Mindanao on Dec. 16, 2021, it toppled electric poles and wrecked other distribution facilities.

Damage to Soleco facilities is projected to cost PHP800 million in total.
