ASF-free in 13 LGUs in Bicol

More local government units (LGUs) in the region with previously confirmed instances of African swine fever (ASF) have been removed from the quarantine list, according to the Department of Agriculture in Bicol (DA-5) on Thursday.

In an interview, Emily Bordado, DA-5 spokesman, stated 10 municipalities and three cities in four provinces of the region are now ASF-free and have been upgraded from “red” to “pink” zone.

“Red” zones are contaminated locations, while “pink” zones act as a buffer zone close to an infected zone where ASF is not present.

Bulan and Santa Magdalena in Sorsogon; Canaman and Iriga City in Camarines Sur; Daraga, Malilipot, Malinao, Pio Duran, Polangui, Bacacay, Ligao City, and Tabaco City in Albay; and Sta. Elena in Camarines Norte, according to her.

Bordado further mentioned that seven more communities have completed the sentinel protocol but must still submit the relevant documentation in order to be declared ASF-free.

“New pigs must be supplied, grown in previously ASF-infected locations, and monitored for 40 days,” she explained.

According to Bordado, if the pigs live and mature without showing any signs of the ASF virus, based on the results of laboratory testing on blood samples, it becomes one of the reasons for declaring ASF-free status and a requirement for repopulation.

A total of 1,127 farmers have received 1,129 head of sentinel pigs.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) runs two programs to help the hog industry recover: Bantay ASF sa Barangay (BABay ASF Program) and Integrated National Swine Production Initiatives for Recovery and Expansion (INSPIRE) under the Bureau of Animal and Industry (BAI) and the National Livestock Program, respectively.

The BABay ASF Program provides technical help in the areas of disease monitoring, surveillance, and monitoring, as well as the establishment of biosecurity measures for commercial and backyard piggeries, as well as the training and designation of Barangay Biosecurity Officers (BBOS).

The INSPIRE Program, on the other hand, aims to speed up the repopulation and recovery of the pig industry through calibrated repopulation and intensified production, the establishment of breeder multiplier farms, increased biosecurity and surveillance, and credit support for the expansion and modernization of semi-commercial and commercial farms.
