CITY OF CAGAYAN DE ORO — Mayor Oscar Moreno of this city has opposed ideas for tighter border controls, claiming that they will not immediately address the spread of the coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19), especially with the novel “Omicron” subvariant.

“You don’t respond by enforcing tighter border and entry controls. “We’ve learned that those tactics don’t work unless the problem is much worse,” Moreno said in an online briefing on Thursday.

After the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed the local transmission of Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1 on May 17, Moreno maintained an earlier view.

Moreno stated that enforcing strong border controls would exacerbate the economy by restricting people’s mobility.

DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire announced earlier this week that 17 cases of the Omicron subvariant had been discovered across the country.

She added the instances were discovered in Metro Manila, Western Visayas, and Palawan’s Puerto Princesa City.

Compared to the original Omicron strain, the Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1 is thought to be highly transmissible, according to the DOH.

Apart from rigorously adhering to the minimal public health requirements, Moreno believes that Covid-19 vaccine would be the most effective strategy to combat the Omicron subvariant.

“The [Covid-19] immunization is the answer. Vaccination is, without a question, the most important factor. “Vaccination gives really important protection,” the mayor stated.

Moreno said that since the epidemic began in 2020, the city has not used lockdowns unless the Inter-Agency Task Force advises otherwise.

In the continuing vaccination program, the local government recorded a total of 552,182 fully immunized individuals as of Wednesday.

From the city’s total target population of 599,929, this statistic represents 92 percent vaccine coverage.
