Tourism in the Western Visayas is expected to fully return by 2024.

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – According to the Department of Tourism, the tourism industry in Western Visayas, which includes Aklan’s famous Boracay Island, is projected to fully recover from the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic by 2024. (DOT).

Cristine Mansinares, Regional Director of DOT-6 (Western Visayas), stated on Thursday that they had forecast this based on certain variables found with the help of the agency’s experts.

“We’re hoping to be totally recovered by 2024,” she said, “but with the current circumstances, we can certainly speed things up.”

According to Mansinares, regional flight routes and roll-on/roll-off trips are beginning to resume.

According to the DOT-6 official, there has been an increase in the number of workers on Boracay Island, the region’s biggest tourist destination, which is linked to the increasing number of tourists visiting the site.

“It’s a sign that the tourism industry is gradually regaining its footing,” she added.

Mansinares, a former Negros Occidental tourism officer, expressed optimism about the increased number of flights at the Bacolod-Silay Airport, indicating that there is already a demand for travel.

She added that the DOT-6 is considering resuming flights from Clark, Pampanga to Negros Occidental.

“We’re trying to have flights back up and running from Clark, which has already reopened.” We intended to connect Negros Occidental and the rest of (the) cities and municipalities to Clark since it’s an international hub,” Mansinares added.

She also stated that the Department of Transportation, in collaboration with the Department of Labor and Employment and the Small Business Corporation, was able to provide financial and lending support to pandemic-affected tourism employees and micro, small, and medium firms in Western Visayas.

For the first time in two years, Negros Occidental and Guimaras are hosting significant tourism-related events this week.

The Lakbayanihan Tourism Fair 2022 is being hosted at the Ayala Malls Capitol Central in Negros Occidental through May 29.

Guimaras’ Manggahan Festival 2022 was also held till May 22 to commemorate the island’s 30th year as a full province.
