DOST-8 supports a food innovation center to help MSME products diversify.

To meet with changing and demanding market demand, the Department of Science and Technology-Region 8 (DOST-8) is strengthening the seven-year-old Eastern Visayas Food Innovation Center (EVFIC).

The DOST regional office in this city and Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) have signed a new memorandum of understanding to develop more innovative and diverse local food products for micro, small, and medium businesses (MSMEs).

In a phone interview on Monday, DOST-Eastern Visayas assistant regional director for technical operations Marilyn Radam said the new agreement between their agency and one of the region’s top colleges will last three years.

“In terms of product development and technology transfer measures, the EVFIC needs to be strengthened. The deal also aims to provide technical assistance to the processed food business in the region “The Philippine News Agency was informed by Radam.

The DOST is giving about PHP500,000 in funding assistance for the EVFIC’s operations this year, in addition to training and technical consulting.

Previously, the DOST awarded a PHP5 million grant to a research study in partnership with local producers in the city to develop a shelf-stable “lechon paksiw” (roasted pig stewed in vinegar).

The EVFIC strives to reprocess leftover lechon into shelf-stable items like “lechon paksiw de Leyte,” which have the potential to expand their existing market while also serving as emergency food in the event of a natural disaster in the region.

“The EVFIC began operations in 2015 with five food processing machines designed and built by Filipinos. DOST has been providing financing assistance for its functioning since 2017, totaling roughly PHP6 million to date “Radam continued.

The center is located on the main campus of EVSU. The school is in charge of staffing and maintaining the building.

EVFIC has created 1,340 product concepts, 258 food product prototypes, and is currently upgrading 165 technology packages for commercialization by interested MSMEs since its inception in 2015.

It has provided technical training, technical consulting, and product development to a total of 954 MSMEs.

EVFIC is a facility that allows local individuals to turn their food processing ideas and thoughts into creative and commercial goods.

The center provides a variety of services, including comprehensive instruction on the food development process, technical consulting, and packaging and labeling design.

A vacuum fryer, freeze dryer, water retort, and packing machine are among the equipment located at EVFIC.
