DENR sees protected areas in the Philippines as tourist assets

MANILA – On Monday, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) emphasized the need of conserving and promoting the country’s protected areas, which are valuable ecotourism assets.

According to the DENR, protected areas are “designated parts of land and water set aside because of their distinctive physical and ecological significance” and should be protected from “human exploitation.”

The department made a joint declaration with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) during this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity Facebook Livestream to ensure that the said regions are better protected.

Acting DENR Secretary Jim Sampulna stated that the economic value of ecosystem services in the Philippines is valued at US$46 million, or PHP2.3 billion, with protected areas accounting for a large portion of that value.

These regions, according to Sampulna, provide clean water, food, a source of income for indigenous tribes, and habitat for critically endangered species, among other things.

“We are pleased to inform you that we now have 246 statutorily protected places getting regular government funding to support their conservation programs and operations,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tourism Secretary Bernadette-Romulo Puyat identified six of the more than a hundred protected locations that the campaign will promote.

“In support of the year of protected areas initiative, the Department of Transportation’s SOS campaign highlights protected areas in the country through the creation of various multimedia content focusing on six locations: Bongsanglay natural park, Balinsasayao Twin lakes natural park in Negros Oriental, Apo reef natural park, and Mt. Hamiguitan, both in Davao, Summer island natural park in Eastern Samar, and Mt. Timpoong Hibok-hibok natural monument in Mt.

Although some regions may be unfamiliar to other tourists, the DOT recommends that responsible and sustainable tourism be promoted to ensure that these wonderful destinations are enjoyed by future generations.

Visitors and tourists will now be able to realize the importance of this natural asset, according to DILG Secretary Eduardo Ano.

“We anticipate that many will finally learn to love and value our national parks and natural wealth as important sources of livelihood and ecosystem services such as water, erosion control, and natural task management by inviting visitors and tourists from all corners of the archipelago and the world to view and experience our protected areas,” he said.

Each local government unit (LGU), according to Ano, has a critical responsibility to play in preventing illegal activities in these protected regions within their jurisdictions.

“Our local government units (LGUs) are equally important in both restoring the health of national parks and stopping illegal loggers, poachers, and developers from intruding on these natural havens,” he stated.
