Comelec reports that 10% of poll workers’ honoraria had gone unclaimed.

MANILA – Only 90% of the electoral board (EB) members have received their honoraria from the poll authority, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Tuesday.

In a press conference, Comelec Deputy Executive Director for Operations (DEDO) Teopisto Elnas noted, “We only have around 90% (claimed) in the payment of the honoraria of Electoral Boards.”

He advised the remaining EB members who have not yet claimed their honoraria to go to the Election Officer’s Offices (OEOs).

“Our Election Officers have the monies on hand. Please claim your honoraria if you have the time “Elnas explained.

The Comelec has 15 days under the law to meet all commitments, including honorarium payments.

Meanwhile, Elnas claims that the PHP2,000 higher compensation approved by the Comelec en banc is not included in the money paid to teachers thus far.

“As for the increased honoraria, we’re still working out the details, such as how many people are eligible and which places would receive additional honoraria,” he explained.

Last May 9, the Department of Education (DepEd) employed 647,812 teaching and non-teaching personnel as poll workers.

The EB chairpersons will get PHP7,000, EB members PHP6,000, DepEd Supervisor Official PHP5,000, and Support Staff PHP3,000, according to Comelec Resolution No. 10727.

In other news, the Comelec has already received 30 electoral protests.

“The Electoral Contest and Adjudication Department notified me that 30 election protest cases had been received as of May 23,” acting Comelec spokesman John Rex Laudiangco said.

He stated the electoral protests are primarily about local elective positions.

“All of these have been docketed and are currently under examination. Of course, everything will be done according to our policies and procedures “he emphasized.

The national and local elections on May 9 attracted 690 candidates for the congressman, 259 for governor, 219 for vice governor, 1,891 for provincial board members, 4,316 for mayor, 3,824 for vice mayor, and 34,911 for councilors.
