Palace is pleased with Team PH’s performance at the SEA Games.

MANILA, Philippines – Malacanang commended Team Philippines on finishing fourth in the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Hanoi, Vietnam, from May 12 to 23.

“Hanoi, mabuhay ang galing ng atletang Pinoy. Ang ating mga pambansang atleta sa pagtatapos ng Southeast Asian Games sa Vietnam nakapag-uwi ng 52 gold medals, 70 silver medals, at 107 bronze medals. Long live our Filipino athletes in Hanoi (Pang-apat po ang Pilipinas sa labing-isang kalahok na bansa). At the conclusion of the Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam, our national athletes brought home 52 gold medals, 70 silver medals, and 107 bronze medals. In a Palace news briefing on Wednesday, acting presidential spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar claimed, “The Philippines is fourth out of eleven participating countries).”

“Maraming salamat po sa karangalang ibinigay ninyo sa Pilipinas,” he added.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) predicted a third-place result before the start.

Despite the fact that the Philippine contingent’s performance was a far cry from its 149-gold haul when it hosted the biannual meet in 2019, PSC William “Butch” Ramirez stated there was nothing to be ashamed of.

“Despite the multiple hurdles our national athletes had to confront amid the Covid-19 pandemic before competing in Vietnam, our performance in bringing home 52 gold, 70 silver, and 104 bronze medals and ranking fourth overall in the medal standings was a good conclusion,” Ramirez remarked.

Funding training programs to prepare elite athletes for international competition, according to Ramirez, was costly.

“You need money for local and international coaches, as well as flights, transportation, and lodging for worldwide exposure to season them, as well as logistical assistance such as correct nutrition, sports psychology, and medicine for athletes identified overseas or locally,” he continued.

He stated that the Philippine Sports Institute needs appropriate government funding to achieve its aims of maintaining the country’s sports medical and technological knowledge up to date, including upgraded sports rehabilitation facilities, in order to keep up with the rest of the world.

The overall champion, Vietnam, won 446 medals, including 205 gold, 125 silver, and 116 bronze.

Thailand came in second with 92 gold medals, 103 silver medals, and 136 bronze medals, while Indonesia came in third with 69 gold medals, 91 silver medals, and 81 bronze medals.
