BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – More than two years after the outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in the country, the city authorities here announced the lifting of curfew hours on Wednesday night.

Executive Order (EO) 25 was issued by Mayor Evelio Leonardia on May 24, overturning the earlier order that set the curfew from midnight to 4 a.m.

“In accordance with its recovery plans, the city believes it is critical that people’s movements during the new normal be facilitated and made less constrained,” he said.

He noted that while the number of Covid-19 cases has decreased and remained low since February of this year, the city wants to speed up its economic recovery efforts and is taking initiatives to further revitalize commercial activity and stimulate economic spending.

Leonardia first implemented the 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew in March 2020, after the city was placed under general community quarantine.

The curfew was later changed to 11 p.m. to 4 a.m., then midnight to 4 a.m., before eventually being removed on Wednesday.

The city has been on Alert Level 1 of the country’s Covid-19 alert level system since March of this year, according to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID).

This is owing to the city’s high vaccination rate and ongoing drop in Covid-19 cases, both of which indicate that the local government unit handled the epidemic effectively.

“All of these achievements would not have been possible without the participation of all parties,” Leonardia remarked.
