PCG’s newest multi-role vessel sails from Japan to the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines β€” The Philippine Coast Guard’s (PCG) newest 97-meter multi-role response vessel (MRRV) has been shipped from Japan and is expected to arrive on June 1.

PCG Commandant Admiral Artemio Abu said the vessel, BRP Melchora Aquino, is “another brand-new capital ship” comparable to BRP Teresa Magbanua, during a speech during the ship’s send-off ceremony in Japan on Friday.

“This stalwart white ship will act as a stalwart protector of our maritime reserve, as well as an instrument for peace and tranquillity within our territorial waters,” Abu explained.

The ship will be a “symbol of hope,” a “source of national pride,” and a tool for advancing the rule of law at sea and “raising amity among adjacent nations,” according to him.

He said the vessel “symbolizes the strong relationship and cooperation” between Japan and the Philippines, as it was built by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

BRP Melchora Aquino and BRP Teresa Magbanua were bought under the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project Phase 2, according to Transportation Undersecretary for Maritime Admiral George Ursabia Jr. (Ret.) in a separate address.

Ursabia expressed gratitude to the Japanese government and people for being the Philippines’ “closest development allies” and contributing to the country’s progress.

“I am convinced that our excellent relationship and decade-long friendship, which has resulted in the realization of several development projects,” Ursabia added, “will further reinforce our bond to be able to resist the tides of time.”

The PCG’s newest MRRVs are based on the Kunigami-class vessel of the Japanese Coast Guard and have a maximum speed of 24 knots and a range of 4,000 nautical miles.

The ships can conduct long-term marine patrols in the Philippines’ maritime territories, including the West Philippine Sea and the Philippine Rise.

The BRP Teresa Magbanua and other PCG vessels were dispatched to Makassar, Indonesia, on Sunday to represent the Philippines in the Marine Pollution Exercise 2022, which will take place from May 22 to 27.

Indonesia’s Directorate General of Sea Transportation and the JCG are participating in the drill with the PCG.
