Medical insurance is no longer necessary for students enrolled in face-to-face classes.

MANILA, Philippines β€” The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) rescinded the directive on Friday, and college students would no longer be forced to obtain medical insurance for in-person class attendance.

In a press conference at the White House, Undersecretary Michel Kristian Ablan, the Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, said the IATF had just authorized the easing of the requirement for higher education institutions (HEIs).

“Inaprubahan na rin ng IATF ang pag-abolish sa medical insurance ng mga estudyante (The IATF has approved the Commission on Higher Education’s recommendation to repeal the medical insurance [requirement] among students),” Ablan stated.

Regarding the IATF’s clearance, no details have been released.

Several organisations have advocated for the requirement to be lifted because it imposes additional costs on students.

Several organizations, like the Office of the Student Regent at the University of the Philippines, have previously urged authorities to give universal medical coverage.

CHED – Department of Health joint memorandum circular 2021-004 specifies the order.

HEIs are required to guarantee that all students who will engage in the limited face-to-face classes are enrolled with the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. or equivalent insurances that cover expenses linked to the coronavirus sickness 2019 under Section IV.H of the memorandum circular (Covid-19).

Learners who are classified as Alert Level 1 may attend their limited face-to-face lessons.
