The New York Times reported on Wednesday that as coronavirus cases have increased across the United States, some universities and public school systems have reimposed indoor mask mandates on their campuses, indicating that while the academic year may be drawing to a close, the pandemic is far from over.

On Wednesday, the University of Hawaii’s rule was expanded across its ten campuses, requiring masks in all indoor locations except while working alone or when social separation is possible.

The institution said it took the measure because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had placed practically the whole state in the high-risk category for community transmission.

When the University of Delaware announced that its mask mandate would once again include all indoor spaces, effective Tuesday, it cited increased new-case reports and hospitalizations both in its own state and across the country.

On Saturday, President Joe Biden, an alumnus, will deliver the commencement address at the university.

Some public school systems, including two in Rhode Island, Providence and Central Falls, have taken similar steps this week to implement universal indoor masking.

Officials from both systems were quoted as saying that they are both in a county that was recently identified as high risk.

On Monday, the mask requirement in Philadelphia schools was reinstated.

According to the article, when city officials attempted to do the same for other indoor public locations in April, they reversed course after four days.
