The minimum wage for Eastern Visayas workers has yet to be decided by the wage board.

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – The Eastern Visayas (Region 8) Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) has failed to make a decision on the proposed daily rise for minimum wage employees in the region, despite a series of consultations.

Workers and employers who attended public hearings and discussions in six locations from April 22 to May 23 are currently being reviewed by the board.

“As soon as the RTWPB makes a decision, we will issue a statement.” In a phone interview on Tuesday, Norma Rae Costimiano, regional information officer of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), said, “The review is ongoing, and we don’t know when the decision will come out, but the aim is to issue a wage order immediately.”

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) leads the RTWPB, a tripartite organization comprised of six members: three government representatives, two workers’ representatives, and one employer representative.

The RTWPB held the first public hearing in Macrohon, Southern Leyte, on April 22, and the same activity in Ormoc City, Northwest Leyte, on April 27.

Similar events were conducted at Borongan City for Eastern Samar province, Calbayog City for Samar province, Catarman town for Northern Samar province, and Tacloban City for northern Leyte province from May 16 to 23.

The review is in response to a petition filed by the Solidarity of Unions in the Philippines for Empowerment and Reforms to modify the daily minimum wage of private sector workers to PHP750 per day.

Under Wage Order No. 21, which was issued in August 2019, the current minimum daily pay in the region is PHP325 per day.

As of May 30, five RTWPBs across the country have already decided to raise the minimum daily wage.

Northern Mindanao, Central Visayas, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, and Caraga Region have these boards.
