The Department of Health and the Department of Education in Ilocos target schools with low vaccination rates.

Although vaccination is not required to attend the face-to-face (F2F) lessons, the Ilocos Region’s health and education agencies will continue to promote increased delivery of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccine.

Editha Giron, the Department of Education (DepEd) Ilocos program supervisor for the curriculum and management division, said the department promotes immunization for the protection of students in a virtual forum on Tuesday.

“Aside from the school’s (facilities), we’re also preparing the school as a whole, with its students and staff, for the upcoming school year’s F2F lessons,” she explained.

Last year, DOH and DepEd issued a joint agreement, which was renewed this year, to intensify the push for vaccination among students and teachers in the region, focusing on areas with poor immunization rates.

“The virus is still present, and we are still in the midst of a pandemic,” she explained.

As of May 26, 319,532 students from kindergarten through senior high school have completed their vaccinations.

Dr. Marjorie Pudin of the DepEd Ilocos Education Support Services Division stated 17,379 students received booster shots in the same virtual forum.

“We need to raise the vaccination rate among children aged five to eleven,” Pudin continued.

Dr. Rheuel Bobis Bobis, the Department of Health Center for Health Development Ilocos Region Covid-19 focal person, said, “We are coordinating with the schools and local government units for the conduct of vaccinations in schools while the school year has not yet ended to increase the coverage for 5 to 11 years old.”
