‘Libreng Sakay’ benefits 81.4 million passengers.

MANILA, Philippines — More than 81 million people have benefited from the “Libreng Sakay” (free ride) program and other services provided by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board’s service-contracting program (SCP) (LTFRB).

The LTFRB said in a Facebook post on Wednesday that from April 3 to May 30, the third phase of the transportation subsidy program serviced 81,444,168 passengers.

The program has since spread beyond the Epifanio de Los Santos Avenue (Edsa) Busway to various parts of the National Capital Region and beyond.

“Dagdag pa rito, nagbukas din ng rutang PITX-NLET at Cubao-NLET para sa mga mananakay na patungo at palabas ng Metro Manila mula Region 1, Region 2, Region 3, at CAR,” she said. (In addition, the PITX-NLET and Cubao-NLET lines have been launched to service passengers traveling beyond of Metro Manila to Regions 1 [Ilocos], 2 [Cagayan Valley], 3 [Central Luzon], and the Cordillera region),” according to the LTFRB.

More routes and public utility vehicles (PUVs) are expected to join the SCP and its free ride program in other parts of the country, which will benefit riders.

PUV drivers and operators that participate in the SCP can earn extra money dependent on how many miles they travel per week.

The program is intended to assist the transportation sector in the face of rising fuel and other product prices.
