MANILA, Philippines — Menardo Guevarra, the Justice Secretary, announced Thursday that he has given the go-ahead for the chief of the National Bureau of Inquiry’s (NBI) Cybercrime Investigation and Assessment Center to be relieved of his duties, pending an internal investigation into a suspected anomalous operation.

Guevarra said that he was consulted prior to Victor Lorenzo’s release, but added that he “will leave (NBI officer in charge) Eric Distor to choose Lorenzo’s assignment awaiting investigation.”

“I believe this is regular operating procedure anytime any NBI official or agent is under investigation by the internal affairs section in order to preserve evidence and avoid any undue influence during the probe.” “It is in my interest as Secretary of Justice to ensure professionalism, discipline, and ethical conduct among the personnel and operatives of our country’s primary investigating organization,” he stated.

Guevarra said the exact specifics of Lorenzo’s unit’s incident are still unknown, but that it involved a Manila operation.

“(I)t was about the service of a warrant to search, seize, and examine computer data in a certain establishment in Manila last May 31 where some alleged irregularities were observed, in general,” the statement said “He went on to say that because the matter is being investigated by the NBI’s internal affairs division, no further details could be given.
