The government’s free ride program in Eastern Visayas is set to terminate on June 25.

The Land Transport and Franchising Regulator Board (LTFRB) said on Tuesday that the third phase of the service contracting program (SCP), which has been providing free rides in Eastern Visayas since mid-April, will conclude on June 25.

According to Veronica Reposar, chief of the LTFRB Eastern Visayas regional transportation development office, the program will not be extended this year after it was implemented in 66 routes with 885 units of transport service vehicles.

“Because the funds granted are practically depleted, the program in the region will come to an end on June 25.” In fact, the service contracting program for numerous units will expire on Saturday,” Reposar said in a phone interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

The LTFRB’s head office has set up PHP235 million for the third phase of the SCP in the region, which began on April 19.

According to Reposar, the SCP ensures the income of drivers and operators while also assisting commuters in saving money on transportation costs during the pandemic.

As of May 31, 2,555,109 travelers in Eastern Visayas had benefited from the program’s third rollout.

Public utility vehicle owners and drivers who participate in the government’s free ridership program will get a one-time payment and monthly payments based on the number of kilometers traveled each week, whether or not they have passengers, under the LTFRB’s service contracting program.

A commercial company uses the global positioning system, or GPS, to track each public utility vehicle.

The General Appropriations Act 2022, which has a total amount of PHP7 billion authorized for roughly 13,000 to 15,000 cars with about 1,000 routes statewide, commenced the service contracting program phase III.
