Solon wants to raise the poverty thresholds.
MANILA, Philippines — The new minimum criteria for being designated as poor, according to a party-list lawmaker, should be either the minimum wage rate or the nontaxable income rate.
Rep. Rodolfo Ordanes of the Senior Citizen Party list said in a statement that the present poverty level, or the eligibility of poor persons for government charity social assistance, is “too low.”
Ordanes urged the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of the Interior and Local Government, and Department of Health to raise the qualification ceilings so that more people can benefit from free government services.
“The purchasing power of minimum wage earners has been substantially diminished due to the current high pricing of most products and services. They don’t have enough discretionary cash to cover the costs of sending their children to school, daily commutes to and from work, and the demands of family members who are sick, elderly, PWDs (persons with disabilities), or have special needs “he stated
Most poverty standards and qualifications, he said, may be moved upward administratively, without the need for new legislation.
More comprehensive indigency criteria and credentials, according to Ordanes, can be introduced more quickly because only administrative modifications are required.
