Lorenzana expresses gratitude to the incoming Manila mayor for the ‘fortunate catch’
Delfin Lorenzana, Secretary of the Department of National Defense (DND), commended Manila Mayor-elect Maria Sheilah “Honey” Lacuna-Pangan for catching him when he fainted during the 124th Independence Day flag-raising ceremony at Rizal Park on Sunday.
“Do you think miracles happen? Yes, I do. When I fell due to heat and weariness last Sunday, Mayor-elect Dra. Honey Lacuna of Manila saved me from a potentially life-altering injury. Mayor Honey, thank you once more for being in the right place at the right time!” Lorenzana remarked on Tuesday in a Facebook post.
Lorenzana also thanked everyone who expressed worry and prayed for his well-being shortly after the tragedy in a subsequent post-Monday afternoon.
Lorenzana had previously attributed his fainting to a lack of rest and sleep as a result of his recent string of international security engagements, which included a June 10-11 speaking engagement at the International Institute for Strategic Studies Shangri-La Dialogue (IISS) in Singapore.
On the topic of “Military Modernization and New Defense Capabilities,” the DND chief addressed at the defense summit’s fourth plenary session.
Lorenzana confirmed that he landed in Manila early on Sunday morning for the Independence Day celebrations.
Lorenzana has also recently been to South Korea and other regions of the Philippines while managing the country’s defense operations and transition to a new administration, according to DND spokeswoman Arsenio Andolong.
He went on to say that the DND chief’s busy itinerary in recent weeks, as well as the high heat in Luneta, “may have resulted in his exhaustion.”
