Ridership on MRT-3 ‘Libreng Sakay’ is expected to hit 10 million in June.
MANILA, Philippines — In June, the third and last month of its ‘libreng sakay (free ride)’ initiative, the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) is on target to serve about 10 million passengers.
The MRT-3 has provided 5,192,905 free rides from June 1 to 15, according to a Facebook post on Thursday, compared to 8,472,639 ridership from March 28 to April 30 and 9,597,784 from May 1 to 31.
This comes after the MRT-3 set many records for single-day ridership in June, the biggest of which being 381,814 people on June 10.
“Ito ang pinakamataas na bilang ng mga pasahero na sumakay ng MRT-3 mula nang magbalik operasyon ang linya noong Hunyo 2020,” said the MRT-3.
Since the initiative began in March, the MRT-3 has provided 23,263,336 free trips to the general population.
The initiative, which was inaugurated in March by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, was created to highlight the MRT-3’s recent massive renovation’ and to help the people cope with rising fuel and other products prices.
