The newly rebuilt Molo plaza in Iloilo City is now available to the public.

CITY OF ILOILO – According to the president of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), Iloilo City is “one of, if not the site in the country” with the most restored plazas open to the public to visit.

On Friday evening, the Commission formally turned over the newly renovated Molo plaza, which was lit up at the same time as the project and the church.

In his message, NHCP chairperson Dr. Rene Escalante stated that Iloilo is one of, if not the city in the country with the highest number of restored projects.

“I have to acknowledge that as I travel around the nation, I have to remark that Iloilo, unlike other places, has been able to keep its open spaces.” “In Iloilo, the majority of the plazas are still open,” he remarked.

The statues of Greek goddesses and the Maria Clara monument are among the items that have been repaired inside the plaza.

He also mentioned that a fountain was constructed to break up the monotony of the artworks.

Senator Franklin Drilon of Ilonggo enabled the PHP20 million rehabilitation fund, and his attendance at the occasion was deemed one of his official functions in Iloilo before he quits from government duty on June 30.

“This plaza reminds me of my boyhood, so it’s only fitting that I return here as one of my final visits as a senator.” “I will no longer be a senator in two weeks; I will simply be an Ilonggo who will be a friend to all,” he stated.

Drilon, a Molo native, said the church was vital to him since it was where he was baptized.

Because of its historical value, the senator also assisted in the search for money to rebuild the Molo church.

According to NHCP research, national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal visited the Molo church in the early to late 1800s.

Roel Castro, president of More Electric and Power Corporation, which funded the lighting project, stated that the city will be a partner in celebrating its rich history.

In his award speech, Mayor Jerry P. Treas stated that the Molo plaza is the city’s first restored plaza.

He promised not to let the place be vandalized or destroyed in any way.

He added that the municipal government will deploy police and green guards, while the City Environment and Natural Resources Office will ensure that the park’s beauty is preserved.

Meanwhile, Escalante stated that the restoration of the Jaro belfry, bandstand, and Graciano Lopez Jaena monument at the Jaro Plaza will be completed sometime in September.

They will also have the freshly repaired Custom House, which will be used as the country’s marine museum, by the end of the year.
