The Philippines has improved its position in the Global Peace Index.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines’ improvement in the Global Peace Index (GPI) this year, according to the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU), is the outcome of a concerted drive for a complete peace process.

According to the Institute for Economics and Peace’s latest GPI data, the Philippines rose four places to number 125 out of 163 countries.

The Philippines received its highest score in peacefulness in a decade, thanks to “substantial improvements in political stability, the impact of terrorism, and homicide rates,” according to the report.

Along with Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Algeria, the Philippines was named one of the five countries with the greatest advances in peace and security by the GPI.

The Philippines saw the most improvement in the Asia-Pacific region, according to the report, “led by changes in the country’s safety and security, as well as continuous conflict zones.”

The top three countries were Iceland, New Zealand, and Ireland, while Afghanistan, Yemen, and Syria were the least peaceful.

GPI 2022 also indicated that global peacefulness declined by 0.3 percent, marking the 11th time in the last 14 years that it has deteriorated.

On Saturday, OPAPRU Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said the better GPI ranking demonstrates the national government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and order.

“We are quite pleased with the new GPI results. “This is confirmation that the Duterte administration’s six-year peacebuilding efforts are now bearing fruit,” Galvez said in a statement.

“This also demonstrates that the Philippine peace process is on the right track.” The GPI 2022 results should motivate the next administration to build on and maintain the achievements of peace,” he continued.

The Global Peace Index (GPI) gathered 23 qualitative and quantitative variables to assess the peace conditions of countries around the world.

Major domains such as safety and security, continuing domestic and international conflict, and the degree of militarization are used to identify and score peace.

“Now that our worldwide ranking has improved, we must work even more to ensure that our regional rankings reflect these peace benefits,” Galvez added.

Galvez complimented President Rodrigo Duterte’s government for implementing whole-of-nation and whole-of-society techniques.

The OPAPRU pushed major programs aimed at implementing peace agreements with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, Moro National Liberation Front, Rebolusyonaryong Partido Manggagawa ng Pilipinas/Revolutionary Proletarian Army/Alex Boncayao Brigade-Tabara Paduano Group (now known as Kapatiran), and the Cordillera Bodong Administration – Cordillera People’s Liberation Army to achieve the government

“We shall also be developing our foreign partnerships so that we can have a ripple effect around the globe,” Galvez added as Filipinos reap the benefits of peace.

“The OPAPRU, in collaboration with the security, justice, and peace cluster, is dedicated to promoting global peace. “We remain open to collaborating with other peace partners that share our aim of fostering global peace,” he stated.
