As the servicing contract ends, free rides on the Edsa will continue.
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said Wednesday that free bus trips at the Epifanio de Los Santos Avenue (Edsa) Busway would continue after the third stage of the Service Contracting Program (SCP).
In a statement, the LTFRB stated that 118 routes covered by the most recent SCP have terminated as of June 16 and an additional 28 routes are scheduled to end on June 30.
The LTFRB stated, “But the free rides at the Edsa Busway Carousel are patuloy na magbibigay serbisyo para sa mga commuter hanggang July 31 (But the free rides at the Edsa Busway Carousel will continue to give service to commuters until July 31).”
It stated that the buses providing free rides at the Edsa Busway start their first trip at 4 am and end it at 11 pm every day.
As of Tuesday, it stated that 203,639,626 passengers have been serviced by the SCP overall, from its initial phase in 2020 until its third phase this year.
“The initiative has onboarded 65,256 PUV units, including 4,461 open routes, and onboarded 2,197 businesses and cooperatives worldwide,” it stated.
The “Bayanihan to Recover as One Act” allocated PHP5.58 billion for the SCP’s first phase in November 2020, and PHP3 billion was allocated for the second phase under the 2021 General Appropriations Act.
The SCP received PHP7 billion on April 11 as part of the 2022 General Appropriations Act for its third phase.
By providing additional revenue, the program, which is being carried out by the LTFRB and the Department of Transportation, intends to assist public transportation workers, particularly those impacted by the coronavirus outbreak and rising pump prices.
