DND approves the VP Security, Protection Group’s activation.

The Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group (VPSPG), a dedicated force that will safeguard the safety and security of the Vice President and family, has been authorized by the Department of Defense (DND).

The VPSPG, formerly known as the Vice Presidential Security Detachment, was activated at a ceremony held on Friday at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) general headquarters under the direction of Chief of Staff Gen. Andres Centino.

Lt. Col. Rene Giroy was appointed as the first VPSPG Commander by Centino.

The second-highest elected person in the nation’s second-highest elected official, the AFP “thought it fitting to give the Office of the Vice President with a specific unit that shall safeguard his or her safety and security,” he said.

He continued, “I am convinced that the newly designated VPSPG Commander and the other officers and enlisted soldiers entrusted to safeguard the safety, security, and wellbeing of the Vice President and her family shall do their duties to the best of their abilities.

Vice President-elect Sara Duterte expressed her gratitude for the DND, AFP, and Secretary Delfin Lorenzana’s “positive response and action” to her proposal to establish a security division distinct from the Presidential Security Group and assign it to the Vice President’s Office in a statement.

According to Duterte’s statement released from Davao City, “The activation of the VPSPG is laudable as it will resolve the issue of continuity in security for all vice presidents of the Philippines.”

This AFP move also emphasizes how crucial it is to have a separate organization that will give the Philippine vice presidents the required security and protection, she continued.
