Carlos’ appointment as national security adviser has pleased DND. Lorenzana

Delfin Lorenzana, the departing secretary of the Department of National Defense (DND), said that Dr. Clarita Carlos’ selection as the new national security adviser represents somewhat of a homecoming since she previously served as the head of the National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP).

“Given that she formerly held the position of 16th President of the National Defense College of the Philippines from 1998 to 2001, her nomination to the Department is akin to a homecoming. She holds the distinction of being the first and only female civilian to head the higher institution for national defense and security and is renowned for being feisty and media-savvy “Lorenzana stated in a weekend Facebook post.

Carlos and Lorenzana recently had a lovely and enlightening conversation, and Lorenzana went on to say that the DND is delighted to have her back.

The former University of the Philippines–Diliman political science professor Carlos is now retired.

She also served as a consultant for the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process, Congress, and other federal bodies.

Carlos has written books and articles on a variety of topics, including elections, security and defense, and foreign affairs.

In a subsequent Facebook post, Lorenzana said that on June 23, he also met with former AFP commander Gen. Jose C. Faustino Jr., who would take over as his replacement as the senior undersecretary and officer-in-charge of the DND.

“Gen. Jose C. Faustino and his incoming staff visited with us. He received a briefing on the Department’s goals, functions, and the Secretary’s main responsibilities “Added he.

Additionally, Lorenzana noted that the presentation was brief since Faustino is well-versed in the DND due to his recent retirement as head of the AFP in November.

“He will get started right away as the Head of the DND, as I already stated. Gen. Faustino and crew, welcome to the squad. Good fortune! “Added he.

On November 13, Faustino will take over as DND secretary, ending the one-year ban on military retirees holding administrative positions.

Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, who retired from active duty on July 31, 2021, was succeeded as head of the AFP by Faustino.

On November 12 of the same year, he resigned from his position as head of the AFP after turning 56, the obligatory retirement age.

Faustino served as the Joint Task Force Mindanao’s commander and the Philippine Army’s acting commanding general before being named the 56th AFP chief-of-staff.

He graduated from the 1988 class of the Philippine Military Academy.
