NTF ELCAC informs NUJP that journalism must be in service of the truth.

The National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF ELCAC) reminded the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines that the goal of journalism is to always seek the truth and to report it objectively (NUJP).

“Journalism must always put the truth first; it should never put the interests of any one person or group ahead of the truth. Journalism in the strictest sense of the word is not being practiced otherwise. It is already participating in propaganda, according to a statement released on Wednesday by Chris Gonzales, spokeswoman for legal affairs for the NTF-ELCAC.

The NUJP is once more accusing the government of harassment, of limiting press freedom, and of stifling journalism, according to the NTF ELCAC.

The NUJP declared on Wednesday that it is united in opposition to any claimed attempts to suppress journalists.

The National Telecommunications Commission had already instructed internet service providers to block the news websites Bulatlat and Pinoy Weekly and to enforce regulations on block time transmission, according to the NUJP.

Gonzales claimed that the NUJP’s reaction to its concerns in its statement was incongruous.

He claimed that Rappler’s closure by the SEC is legitimate and justified.

The SEC upheld its earlier decision to revoke Rappler Inc. and Rappler Holding Corporation’s certificates of incorporation for “violation of constitutional and legislative prohibitions on foreign ownership in mass media” in an order dated June 28.

“No one is above the law in this nation of laws. No one. Not Rappler, for sure,” Gonzales stated.

In the meanwhile, he continued, the NTC has more than enough justification to compel the shutdown of Bulatlat and Pinoy Weekly.

The request made to the NTC, according to National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon, “is based on undisputed hard facts and evidence [that the NUJP and all other pocket reactionary groups have refused to perceive and understand objectively] that would warrant the issuance of the NTC order,” he claimed.

According to Gonzales, the NTC’s regulation of block time broadcasting arrangements is a reasonable use of its regulatory authority.

The NUJP’s ability to respond to and openly criticize the conduct of the government and its agencies, according to him, is evidence that press freedom and freedom of expression are both very much alive in the nation.

The government agencies like the SEC and the NTC have their respective duties to implement the law and exercise their regulatory powers as permitted by our laws, he said. “If the NUJP so intends, they can attack the government on a daily basis, but that will not change that fact,” he said.

Esperon previously claimed that the websites Bulatlat and Pinoy Weekly encourage false information and even terrorism.

Misinformation, which divides the Filipino people and keeps us from objectivity and the truth, “remains to be one of the nation’s biggest foes; and is indeed a potent tool utilized by the Communist Terrorist Group to sow enmity and strife,” Esperon said.

We cannot just turn a blind eye to the reality that websites like Bulatlat and Pinoy Weekly have actively sponsored organizations connected to the CPP-NPA-NDF, he continued. “While we acknowledge that they have been using their platforms to distribute information on causes important to them.

Esperon claimed that the news sites’ stories and articles played a role in the decision to add the two news outlets to the list of websites linked to the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF).

The United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines have designated the CPP-NPA as a terrorist group.

On June 23, 2021, the ATC also publicly labeled the NDF as a terrorist group, describing it as “an intrinsic and inseparable part” of the CPP-NPA, which was established in April 1973.
