Farmers in Surigao Sur see optimism in mechanized corn cultivation
With the help of farm mechanization, a group of farmers in the Surigao del Sur village of Tago is optimistic about the future of corn cultivation.
Agricultural mechanization is still one of the best ways to increase farm output and farmers’ take-home pay, according to Richard Virtudazo, chair of the Bangsud Anahao Bag-o Kinabigtasan Farmer’s Association (BAKIFA).
In an interview on Friday, Virtudazo added, “We thank the government for the farm machinery we received through the Department of Agriculture-Caraga Region (DA-13).”
A combine harvester and a pneumatic corn planter valued at PHP3.8 million were delivered to BAKIFA on Thursday by the DA-13 and the National Corn Program (NCP).
The 148 corn farmers who are active BAKIFA members would get an immediate advantage from the machinery, according to Virtudazo, who also added that it will make labor easier and allow members to save more.
He said that 50 founding members from several Tago barangays joined the group in 2019.
The NCP Director Milo Delos Reyes said in a separate statement on Friday that the farm machinery intervention will solve the difficulties encountered by the corn farmers in the community, particularly in improving their lives through higher income.
Delos Reyes added, “We appeal to the officers and members of BAKIFA to maintain the machinery in good condition by adhering to the suggested care and maintenance.
