Last phase of “Libreng Sakay” has 6.2 million riders: LTFRB-11

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 11 (Davao region) said on Friday that the Libreng Sakay Program has served more than six million riders in the area after three months.

For the third and final stage of Libreng Sakay here, which took place from April 11 to June 30, LTFRB-11 was awarded PHP270 million through the government’s service contracting program (SCP).

They claimed to have counted 6,154,124 riders throughout that time.

The program, according to LTFRB-11 Director Don Llanos III, “aims to offer the transport business, as well as the commuting public, the convenience and ease during this period of the epidemic,” with at least 46 transportation providers participating.

Llanos claimed that the agency was fortunate to obtain a sizable chunk of the PHP7 billion allocated for the SCP, allowing them to provide more drivers and operators with an opportunity to make money.

According to Jerry Sy, head of the Southern Mindanao Bus Operation Association (SMBOA), their operations were struggling to make ends meet due to fewer travelers on the road and the fuel tax.

“The program improved our circulation. Because they were able to preserve their jobs, we were also able to keep our staff, he added.
