In 2023, India is anticipated to overtake China as the most populous nation.

A UN research released on Monday predicts that the world’s population will hit 8 billion on November 15 of this year and that India will overtake China as the world’s most populous nation in 2023.

In its most recent research, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) stated that the world population might increase to approximately 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050, and 10.4 billion in 2100. The report was made public on World Population Day.

According to the UN, the then-Governing Council of the UN Development Program launched World Population Day in 1989 with the goal of drawing attention to the urgency and significance of population concerns.

The research said that decreasing death rates are one of the factors contributing to population growth and that, globally, life expectancy reached 72.8 years in 2019, an increase of nearly nine years since 1990.

The UN research noted that, in 2023, India is expected to overtake China as the world’s most populated nation. It also noted that, with 2.3 billion people, Eastern and South-Eastern Asia were the world’s two most populous areas in 2022.

“People should come first”

The COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, according to the UN Population Fund, have either become worse or are staying the same.

The statement made reference to statistics showing that more than 100 million people had been forcefully displaced globally, saying “the world passed a particularly terrible milestone in May.”

According to UN Population Fund, individuals should be the main concern. By enhancing people’s health and wellbeing, it continued, “instead of making systems work for the numbers, make the numbers work for the systems.”

The emphasis should be on “every person,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated in a message.

Guterres wrote on Twitter, “[Let’s focus] on defending human rights & the ability of all persons to make informed decisions about whether & when to have children.”

According to a report from The Indian Express, India has overtaken China as the world’s most populated nation in 2022, with a population of 1.412 billion, compared to China’s 1.426 billion.
