CHED appreciates PBBM for supporting requests for a review of the curriculum

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) applauded President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s statement on Wednesday emphasizing the need for the education sector to review and, if necessary, change the current curriculum in order to address the country’s graduate employment mismatch.

Prospero “Popoy” De Vera III, chair of CHED, stated during a virtual press conference that the President’s comment on the matter was urgently needed in light of how quickly technology and other industries are changing.

De Vera said that they have been attempting to deal with these changes, especially during the past two years when the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic started to disrupt workplace expectations.

We’ve been doing this for the past two years, and the Commission appreciates President Marcos for emphasizing the necessity for ongoing curriculum visits and revisions. A curriculum that is not updated is impossible because you risk falling behind. For instance, he cited courses that reflect substantial changes in the market.

Trixie Cruz-Angeles, the press secretary, had reported that Marcos had informed his Cabinet members that pupils’ foundational knowledge and skills must be strengthened in order to prepare them for higher-level study.

“Exactly that is what is taking place. Because of this, we also need to examine the curriculum. Not only of our diploma courses but even of TESDA’s (Technical Education and Skills Development Authority) courses,” Marcos had added.

They had to change the tertiary education curriculum in response to the Kinder to Grade 12 (K-12) Program, which resulted in the major shortening of various programs, including the previously five-year-long engineering degrees.

The general education curriculum was moved from higher education to senior high, he said, adding, “We have been examining it continuously. Remember, we authorized the new curriculum in all degree programs because of Senior High.

De Vera claimed that in order to address employment mismatch, they had begun “reconstituting technical panels” across all programs.

“The technical panel’s reorganization assures that academia, business, and the government will be equally represented… They are the ones who explain or discuss in the technical panel the types of abilities that the graduates must possess, the speaker continued.

The technical group is also anticipated to produce roadmaps outlining trends, particularly the country’s medium- to long-term supply and demand trends.

Likewise, De Vera claimed that in response to Marcos’ appeal to further promote agricultural and technological professions, steps had long been taken to encourage young people to participate in programs connected to agriculture.

“We’ve been attempting to accomplish that for a number of years; the Department of Agriculture financed a pretty magandang scholarship program for Agri students. Actually, students studying fisheries are more important than those studying agriculture; therefore, the number of agricultural students should be raised. It’s paradoxical that there are more students studying fisheries than agriculture—”fisheries is more, parang mas konti ang estudyante sa fisheries kaysa sa agri,” he added.

While this is going on, the Department of Education (DepEd) has not yet released a statement regarding the country’s basic education curriculum being reviewed.
