PNP strengthens effort to combat cybercriminals

According to Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Philippine National Police-Anti Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) will increase the number of people it employs, the quality of its tools, and the extent of its training in combating cybercrimes.

Colonel Bowenn According to PNP-ACG officer-in-charge Joey Masauding, the Covid-19 outbreak caused a significant portion of the populace to engage in computer and gadget tinkering because of stay-at-home guidelines.

The PNP-ACG had recorded and investigated 34,433 instances as of June.

Three people were detained in Binangonan, Rizal, on July 3 for impersonating PNP officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. on social media.

Two laptop computers, ten mobile phones, three passbooks, debit cards, and a 500 GB hard drive were taken from the suspects thanks to a warrant to search, seize, and analyze computer data.

To swindle the complainant, the suspects, according to Masauding, set up a Facebook account and utilized Danao’s profile.

To promote Danao’s Police Community Relations activity, they persuaded the victim to give PHP50,000 as the shipment cost for the delivery of 1,000 sacks of rice.

Masauding said in a statement on Saturday that just as cybercriminals are continually honing their trades, the PNP-combative ACG’s methods also must advance.

“We must always stay one step ahead of these cyber criminals or we risk getting into trouble for failing to address the netizens’ worries about cybercrime,” said Masauding.

Masauding claimed that the PNP-ACG also collaborated with a chain of malls where video examples of cybercrime tactics are displayed before movie showings.

On July 11, Abalos mentioned the growth in cybercrimes, especially pornography, at the PNP’s flag-raising ceremony at Camp Crame in Quezon City.

He told the officers, emphasizing the necessity for information sharing, “So please inform what equipment you need, if it requires seminar or to further study then let’s do it.
