According to a disease expert on Wednesday, the Omicron BA.5 subvariant may be responsible for up to 2,000 new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Dr. Rontgene Solante claimed that compared to the other Omicron subvariants circulating in the nation, BA.5 was detected in the bulk of the new cases during a televised public briefing.

If you look at the number of samples we’ve sequenced, it’s not many, but in that small quantity, it can be shown that BA.5 makes up the majority, he added.

“So, that’s already a depiction of what’s happening in the neighborhood, what’s happening in the people,” someone said.

Solante claimed that the majority of those infected with Covid-19 are those who are unvaccinated, as well as boosted and unboosted senior folks and people with comorbidities who are 50 years of age and older.

Because of this, he continued, “we have to concentrate on this one in the vulnerable population, how to maximize the protection, and that is really encouraging them to get the second booster and continue with the health protocols because of their age and immunocompromised condition, which means they have low protection and can contract this BA.5 and be exposed to the severe form of the BA.5.

The Department of Health (DOH) previously stated that even if Omicron subvariants are present and daily infections are rising, border controls do not need to be tightened.

Solante echoed the DOH position, highlighting the significance of keeping an eye on the serious cases and healthcare use.

“Without the fear that when we have this virus, we will be having severe infection, and that includes the effectiveness of how we can manage to increase the (boosted) population and balancing also that we continue to do testing, compliance with the LGU’s requirement to provide vaccines, and at the same time, contact tracing and all other aspects of the pandemic that we can move forward and at the same time without much destruction to our life,” he said.
