The Panay Railway’s projected rebirth was welcomed by the Iloilo City Council, although it was suggested that it be established outside of the city.

In a press conference on Monday, Mayor Jerry P. Treas remarked, “I believe that railroad will help in the transportation and movement of products and personnel, but my worry is the families that are here in the city.”

If the project proceeds, according to Roy Firmeza, the director of the Iloilo City Urban Poor Affairs Office (ICUPAO), 1,000–1,500 homes would need to be evacuated.

The mayor claimed that those who will be impacted are primarily renters rather than informal settlers.

Although the railway, not the local administration, is in charge of relocating the affected residents, the task would require a large budget.

“I shall propose that the railway be built outside of the city if it is forced through. The city already has an excellent road network, he continued, so by doing so we avoid relocating a lot of people.

The unification of the country’s railway system, including the Panay Railway Project, was highlighted by President Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr. on July 25 during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA).
