DepEd: QC college closure was “voluntary with no notice.”

The Department of Education (DepEd) stated on Tuesday that Colegio de San Lorenzo’s (CDSL) voluntary decision to terminate permanently occurred without previous notice.

DepEd official Michael Poa stated in a Viber message that they need confirmation that “transfer of credentials of impacted pupils” are handled and released before announcing the closure of the institution.

“Upon checking with the relevant Regional Director, Colegio de San Lorenzo was found to have had no prior contact with DepEd on the closure. They didn’t formally announce their intention to close to the Department. According to Section 43 of [Department Order] 88 s. 2010, this closure is voluntary, he stated.

The CDSL announced on its Facebook page on Monday night that it has decided to permanently close due to the low enrolment turnout.

The Colegio de San Lorenzo will be permanently closed, the CDSL announced. “With a very heavy heart, we would like to inform you that due to the financial instability and lack of financial viability brought about by the ongoing and made worse by consistent low enrollment turnout over the past years,” the CDSL said.

The university also made sure that all initial participants’ expenditures would be reimbursed in full.

The school also promised to promptly release all students’ records and certificates for this purpose. “We will commence a full refund of funds paid (i.e. tuition, uniform expenses, book prices), and support all students in their transfer to other schools and educational institutions,” it said.

As the official reopening of classes draws near, the DepEd stated that students who are affected should be given priority while being transferred to schools.

“From the perspective of DepEd, students are our top priority. A private school in Quebec has already contacted DepEd to let us know that it is willing to accept students, especially those in Grades 11 and 12, at the same tuition fee as Colegio de San Lorenzo. We hope that additional institutions would follow suit,” Poa remarked.

Accordingly, a number of schools, notably College of Saint Catherine and Villagers Montessori College in Quezon City, have announced their intention to accept cross-enrolled students.
