Pork and swine imports from three provinces are temporarily banned in Pangasinan.
In response to the threat posed by the African swine fever (ASF) virus, the provincial government of Pangasinan is enforcing a temporary restriction on the admission of live pigs and meat from the provinces of Bulacan Pampanga, and Tarlac from August 18 to September 17.
The three provinces were identified as having active instances and falling under the red zone, or areas contaminated with ASF, on the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) updated zoning map and zoning status, according to Governor Ramon Guico III’s Executive Order (EO) 0125, which was published on Friday.
The creation of executive orders and ordinances to control the movement of swine in the provinces was advised by the DA Ilocos regional office, he claimed.
Guico claimed that the provincial veterinary officials had been instructed to uphold the directive to inspect and staff the quarantine checkpoints set up to keep an eye on the EO’s implementation.
Additionally, he said, “all local chief executives are directed to increase biosafety, hygiene, and sanitation requirements in slaughterhouses or abattoirs and public markets in their respective area of authority in order to protect the safety of our constituents and our swine business.”
Guico also instructed the local government entities to exercise caution and immediately report any suspected ASF infections in their areas.
As part of the province’s rehabilitation initiative, the DA has already given the backyard hog farmers who had to kill their pigs because of the ASF more than 2,000 sentinel piglets.
Sentinel piglets have been sent to the 36 towns and cities in the province that have ASF-affected hog farmers.
After 40 days of observation, the sentinel animals tested negative for ASF. They will then be reevaluated after 90 to 120 days of observation.
If the tests come back clean, the region will be deemed free and hog repopulation can begin.
The ASF test kits, reader and laboratory equipment, power sprayers, ASF responder kits, and disinfectants were all given by the DA.
