Extending the state of public emergency to maintain the pandemic response.
The Covid-19 pandemic response plan of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to extend the State of Public Health Emergency (SPHE) till the end of the year will continue efforts to combat the global crisis and other new health dangers.
According to Senator Christopher Lawrence Go, extending the State of Calamity (SOC) will also prolong the effectiveness of Republic Act No. 11525, also known as the Covid-19 Vaccination Program Act of 2021, which allows the private sector and local governments to assist in carrying out the national vaccination program.
When the Department of Health announced the first Covid-19 transmission on March 8, 2020, former president Rodrigo Duterte declared the SPHE (DOH).
The country was placed under SOC eight days later, initially for only six months.
Go said in a statement that once extended, “this will ideally allow the government to continue procuring vaccinations under emergency use authorization, or EUA, and impose price limits on select basic commodities.”
Additionally, he reiterated his support for government programs and measures that promote Filipinos’ health and wellbeing.
As the chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Go, stated, “I support government measures that protect our countrymen’s welfare and health since the most important thing is their lives.
Marcos stated in a media interview that he had addressed the possibility of extending the SPHE “till the end of the year” with Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, the DOH Officer-in-Charge, during the “PinasLakas” vaccine booster campaign on Wednesday at a mall in Manila.
The SOC enables the federal government and local governments to carry out the COVID-19 immunization program, increase pandemic response funds, track and manage the costs of primary commodities and necessities, and offer fundamental services to the afflicted populace.
