Ilocos fishermen receive fuel discount cards from BFAR.

In the coastal communities of Ilocos Norte, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Friday began distributing cards to qualifying fishermen with fuel savings worth PHP3,000.

According to Vanessa Abegail Dagdagan, senior aquaculturist at the BFAR Ilocos Norte, an initial 41 fishermen from Laoag City and Paoay Town received their gasoline discount cards on Saturday.

The card offers participating petrol stations in the province fuel discounts worth PHP3,000, she said.

Nearly 600 fishermen in the province’s eight coastal towns qualified for the national government’s fuel subsidy program to lessen the impact of rising oil costs.

Only registered fishermen who possess three or more fishing boats with a gross tonnage of at least three are eligible for the scheme, according to Dagdagan.

Under the Register System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture, which identifies qualified beneficiaries, the BFAR keeps a boat registry system up to date.

According to reports, several fishermen in the province have reportedly reduced the number of fishing trips they take.
